Pearse & Smyth
Messrs Smyth & Pearse
Based in Armagh, the folk duet Messrs Smyth & Pearse play a wide variety of music which they have made their own using their unique approach to the arrangement of songs. This ‘trans-genre’ style encompasses Irish ballads, folk, blues, country, rock and anything else they feel they can stamp their brand upon.
Their forthcoming album ‘The Interweave’ is a testament to this. It is a coat of magnificent musical colours that will, no doubt, turn many heads when it is released in the Autumn.
In the meantime many will savour the imminent release of the Dylan Pearse solo album ‘Songs from the North Country’. Recorded and co-produced with Dave Molloy, it is a thrilling cascade of emotion that careers through trans-genre. It blends country, traditional Irish ballads, folk, blues, the poetry of Bobby Sands and a newly penned, radio-friendly, indie rock out written in tribute to football legend George Best.
Who are these Messrs? Tiarnán Smyth from Ballymacnab in County Armagh, plays guitar, banjo and concertina, as well as being an accomplished singer. His music has brought him to Scotland, Italy and France. He cites Paul Brady and Dick Gaughan among his many influences. He previously recorded an EP with his sister Méabh (fiddle) to much critical acclaim.
Dylan Pearse is also based in Armagh in the village of Crossmaglen. He plays guitar and bouzouki and is also an accomplished traditional singer. He has travelled extensively performing and delivering workshops in traditional song. He cites a wide range of singers and musicians as a source of influence, including Anne Briggs, Frank Harte, Nick Drake and Robert Smith.
