Culture Night 2023 - Patsy Hanly (flute) Tommy Guihan (flute) & Noel Battle (Mouth Organ)
Patsy Hanly hails from KIlrooskey , Co Roscommon, and was reared in a house where music was held in great reverence, particularly traditional music. As a teenager he did not play much, but spent his time listening and gaining a knowledge of the local tunes and style. As he travelled further afield, he sought the music and company of well-known musicians, singers & storytellers and he soon began to perform along with them.
Steeped in local style, he has been a hugely important influence on a generation of flute players. He has toured extensively with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, America and Canada and his music has taken him all over Europe where, together with his late wife Pauline, they performed concerts and at festivals. He has performed on numerous occasions on TV and most recently (2019 ) he was the subject of a 'Sé Mo Laoch' on TG4. Patsy is also the recipient of the TG4 Lifetime Achievement Award, the' Gradam Saoil'.
Tommy Guihen is a remarkable musician. Steeped in the brilliant flute playing of the Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim masters of the past, he has evolved his own distinctive way of playing with an infectious pulse, swing and vitality allied to an acute musical sensibility.” Mick Moloney
Noel Battle from Mullingar Co Westmeath is twelve times All-Ireland Champion on mouth organ. A long-time member and officer in Mullingar Comhaltas, Noel’s reputation as a traditional musician is remarkable, and his performances during Comhaltas concert tours he made here, in Britain, and in the USA were singled out for his virtuoso talent. Encouraged by Mullingar CCE, in 2009 he first released a CD of his own material, “Music from the Reeds” and a year later he teamed up with Mick Foster and Moyra Fraser, and did so for a further recording in 2014.
Valerii and Olena Supruniuk are a Ukrainian couple living in Ireland. They will perform a programme of Classical and Modern music.
